KING LEAR
by William Shakespeare

As he approaches old age, King Lear (Conleth Hill) looks to divide his kingdom and power between his three daughters, Goneril, Regan and Cordelia. Through feigned praise and affection, Goneril and Regan, receive their inheritance. Cordelia, the youngest who loves Lear deeply, refuses to flatter her father however and is disinherited and banished.

When Goneril and Regan turn him away from their door, Lear begins a journey into madness, wandering homeless and destitute with his devoted companion, the Fool.

With this new production starring Conleth Hill and directed by Roxana Silbert, Shakespeare’s masterpiece returns to the Gate stage for the first time in over 80 years. RAN Screening

The Gate Theatre and IFI present a screening of Akira Kurosawa’s RAN, a reimagining of KING LEAR.

We are excited to be partnering again with the Irish Film Institute (IFI) to co-present a screening of the Oscar-winning classic: RAN in celebration of its 40th anniversary!

ABOUT THE FILM:
Akira Kurosawa’s masterpiece reimagines Shakespeare’s King Lear as a historical epic set in sixteenth-century Japan. At the age of seventy, after years of consolidating his empire, a great lord decides to abdicate and divide his domain amongst his three sons. Taro, the eldest, will rule while Jiro, his second son, and Saburo will take command of the Second and Third Castles but are expected to obey and support their elder brother. Saburo defies the pledge of obedience and is banished. Ran is a look at the folly of war, and of a family’s collapse under the weight of betrayal, greed, and an insatiable thirst for power.
