The Gate Theatre is pleased to announce the next event in its Masterclass series.

On Saturday 30th November and Sunday 1st December 2024, acclaimed theatremakers CHEEK BY JOWL will come to the Gate Theatre to present a MASTERCLASS. The two-day Directing for Theatre workshop, led by Cheek by Jowl’s founders Declan Donnellan and Nick Ormerod, will be a rare and exceptional opportunity to learn from two of the most influential figures in modern theatre.

This masterclass is offered free of charge to successful applicants and is part of our key strategic goal of driving the growth of a connected and confident Irish theatre at home and abroad, while also working towards of our vision of an Open Gate where every person has access to great theatre.

 

About

Donnellan, whose books The Actor and the Space and The Actor and the Target are seminal theatre texts, and Ormerod have made a profound impact on the global stage since founding Cheek by Jowl in 1981. Renowned for their ability to breathe new life into classical works, their productions are celebrated for their vivid, high-energy performances that illuminate the text with striking clarity and intensity.

This immersive workshop will offer participants a deep dive into their creative process, providing practical, hands-on experience in the techniques that have defined their groundbreaking productions. Open to directors and directing students, this Masterclass will cover the core aspect of directing, which is working with actors and the power of ensemble performance.

This masterclass will be a FREE event.
