As the world grapples with the aftermath of a catastrophe at a nuclear power station, two retired nuclear engineers are enjoying a quiet life in their remote cottage by the sea. The arrival of an old friend, however, forces them to face the crumbling world outside and interrogate their responsibility towards future generations. Lucy Kirkwood’s provocative and darkly funny play, The Children, explores ageing, personal responsibility, and the effects of climate change.
Winner of Best Play at the 2018 Writers’ Guild Awards (UK) and nominated for Best Play at the Tony Awards 2018, The Children is part of the Gate’s Spring Season of international new work, centred on the theme of Love and Courage. It is presented SIDE by SIDE with Beginning by David Eldridge.

Lucy Kirkwood
Lucy Kirkwood is a playwright and screenwriter.
In 2009, her play it felt empty when the heart went at first but it is alright now was produced by Clean Break at the Arcola Theatre. Nominated for an Evening Standard Award for Best Newcomer, it made Lucy joint winner of the John Whiting Award. Chimerica premiered at the Almeida Theatre in 2013 and transferred to the West End, earning Best New Play at the Olivier and Evening Standard Awards, as well as the Critics Circle and Susan Smith Blackburn Award.
Recent work includes Mosquitoes at the National Theatre, London, in 2017, and The Children, which premiered at the Royal Court in 2016. The Children opened on Broadway at Manhattan Theatre Club in 2017.
