The Gate Theatre and Dead Poets Live present

DEAD POETS LIVE:
EMILY DICKINSON

with JUSTINE MITCHELL

‘Though I read and teach Emily Dickinson constantly, I remain a bewildered idolator, struggling to understand her enigmatic sublimities. Together with Emerson, Whitman and Henry James, she seems to me America’s highest achievement in thought and the arts. At her strongest, she has something in her lyrics that recalls the swiftness and compression of Shakespeare’s mind.’ – Harold Bloom.

Emily Dickinson (1830–1886) wrote nearly 1800 short poems: epigrammatic, metaphysical, tragic, funny, touching, terrifying … and her correspondence matches the complexity and artfulness of her lyrics. Using letters, poems and analysis, Dead Poets Live will dramatise the life and work of this mysterious, unknowable and unique genius.

JUSTINE MITCHELL has previously appeared at the Gate in Bash, Blithe Spirit, Price and Prejudice, Footfalls, Hedda Gabler and Boston Marriage; Justine won the 2002 Irish Times Theatre Best Supporting Actress Award for Bash and Blithe Spirit. Other theatre credits include Alma Mater (Almeida); Faith Healer (Lyric Hammersmith); Dancing At Lughnasa (National Theatre); Shipwreck (Almeida); The Way of the World (Donmar Warehouse) and Beginning (National/West End). Her film/TV credits include Conversations With Friends (BBC); A Spy Among Friends (ITV); Smother (RTÉ/Peacock, IFTA nomination); and Bad Sisters (Apple+).
