Since the Gate opened almost a century ago, it’s empowering to be reminded that our ethos at the Gate hasn’t changed— to offer a different perspective on theatre, bound only by the limits of our imagination. As this decade comes to a close, we’re taking this opportunity to both look back and gaze forward.
Building on the success of our last two Seasons – THE OUTSIDER and LOVE AND COURAGE – our third Season is entitled POWER AND FREEDOM. The twin themes of POWER AND FREEDOM will unlock our understanding of power, guiding us to find better ways to determine our individual and collective freedom. POWER AND FREEDOM are not mutually exclusive – they are interdependent and these themes are explored through a diverse programme of contemporary and classical work.
Medea is a transformative take on a Greek classic, Our New Girl is an unsettling modern family drama by a young Irish playwright, and two iconic classical plays, The Little Foxes (American) and The Shadow of a Gunman (Irish), both first produced early last century and remain as relevant as ever for 2020.
These stories will be brought to the Gate stage by four visionary theatre directors, four women whose staging of these important plays can guide us towards being stronger and more courageous in our own lives.
We hope we have honoured both the power and the freedom of storytelling, as we embark on the first six months of the new season.
